Book Highlight: Adding a Digital Archive to a Life Story Book

December 30, 2015 Alison Taylor
Adding digital media to a printed book covers all the bases.

Adding digital media to a printed book covers all the bases.

Don't you love the cover photo? I expect him to break out singing, "New York, New York, and wonderful town...the Bronx is up and the Battery's down..." Except that this photo was taken on the Atlantic City boardwalk when Don was training to be a radio operator with the Coast Guard during World War II.

Anyway, this lovely Life Highlights book shows a feature that we offer (and recommend): attaching digital storage media to the book itself.

In this case, we included two forms of media: a DVD (stored in the back of the book) and a flash drive connected to a custom bookmark.

The media contains not only a digital copy of the book, but all the high-resolution photos used in the book, a video interview with Don and his wife,  some home movies, and additional photos not included in the book. This media is easily uploaded to cloud storage and shared among family members and expands on what's in the book.

Including digital media with your printed book provides the best of all worlds: you get the low-tech, easy-access, leaf-able beauty to put on your coffee table; and additional digital files that can be easily shared and replicated for other uses.

A custom bookmark has a 32 GB flash drive attached that has digital media related to the book.

The back of the book has a DVD sleeve so that this media can stay with the book at all times.
